KEEP YOUR REUSABLE TOTE FRESH

You’re saving the environment with your reusable grocery bag, but remember to save your health. After multiple uses, canvas grocery bags can contain germs and bacteria from meat and spilled grocery items. For the health of yourself and your family make sure to keep your totes fresh by washing them after multiple uses. We’re begging you, wash your bag.

Reusable shopping bags express the green spirit as a better sustainable option to plastic. But they can be a problem to your health, as well as reuseable water bottles and containers. If they are not cleaned properly and on a regular basis, they can harbor salmonella and coliform bacteria, according to a recent study.

A Few Safe Practice Pointers & Suggestions:

  • Routinely wash your reusable bags
  • Designate the same bags for meat and the same bags for produce each week. Select bags should be printed with the words “meat: or “produce” to help you keep track of which products go where
  • Do not use the same bags for groceries that you use to carry things like dirty laundry or athletic shoes
  • Do not store your bags in the trunk of your vehicle…where warm temperatures and left over organic material in the bags allow bacteria to thrive
  • Sports bottles can be a source of contamination also..these should be washed regularly, with special care to clean any flip or push-down lids since many people do not wash their hands before opening and closing bottles
  • It is up to the shopper to keep track of which bags are used for what the last time they were shopping

Safe Cleaning

Keep yourself and others in your household safe from things like E-coli by popping your reusable cloth bags in the washing machine in hot water – then run them through the dryer to kill virtually all the harmful bacteria!

We’re begging you, WASH YOUR BAG!
