THE TRUTH ABOUT EGGS
Did you know eggs contain the highest quality of protein that you can buy? Who knew that inside the brittle shell, there is an abundance of nutrients? They come in different sizes and colors but nonetheless, are packed with an abundance of vitamins and minerals. These natural wonders are often not given credit for how beneficial they are simply because of the myths that surround them and their cholesterol content. Within this article I will have included some great information on the benefits of eggs and why you should include them in your diet!
SIZE & COLOR
Have you ever noticed the different sizes and colors of eggs? You may find yourself wondering whether one size or one color is better than the other. Typically as hen grows older, she will produce larger eggs. The breed of the hen ultimately determines the color of the egg. However, all start out white in color but as the egg travels through the hen’s system, it picks up different pigments. This pigment never reaches the inside of an egg. Other than appearance, there are no major differences between eggs from different breed of chickens.
As mentioned earlier, they are packed with varying amounts of vitamins and minerals that can keep us healthy, at the cost of 70 calories per egg. Egg whites contain some of the protein, riboflavin, and selenium but most of the egg’s nutrients are found within the yolk. Some of these nutrients are vitamin D which is critical for bone health and immune function and choline, which is essential for the normal functioning of all cells. Some antioxidants in eggs are lutein and zeaxanthin, and both reduce the risk of developing cataracts and slow the progression of macular degeneration.
EGGCELLENT FOR YOUR DIET
If watching your weight, they are a great option since there are no carbs or sugars within the egg. The high protein is a great option for gaining muscle! Also, they are lower in cholesterol than previously recorded. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a review of the nutrient composition of large eggs shows the average amount of cholesterol is one egg is 185 mg where it was once noted as 215 mg. The amount of vitamin D shown in eggs has increased as well. Feel free to enjoy an egg a day without busting any dietary guidelines. If cholesterol is a concerning factor in your regular diet, feel free to choose egg whites as a great option.
The next time you find yourself at the grocery store, grab a carton of eggs! One great thing about preparing eggs is they can be enjoyed in many different ways. Try a hard-boiled egg for an afternoon snack or try some scrambled eggs in the morning. Add fiber to your day by adding a whole wheat bagel or muffin and prepare an egg sandwich.
